Chief Deputy Prosecutor Dave Sunday (41) is not only leading York County’s fight against illegal drugs; he’s also a top litigator, a United States Navy Veteran and a dynamic leader who put himself through college and law school while working at UPS. His unique combination of experiences provides the citizens of York County a proven leader for District Attorney who not only can do the job but is doing the job right now.

Shortly after high school, Dave joined the Navy as an enlisted recruit and was deployed to the Persian Gulf where he participated in Operation Desert Strike. Dave was also deployed to South America and conducted numerous counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean. Those four years changed his life forever. While serving, Dave learned what it takes to be an effective leader under tremendous pressure. He proudly carries on the Navy core principles of honor, commitment, and courage to this day.

At age 22, Dave returned home and started working at UPS. He worked at UPS every evening for all four years of his undergraduate education. After receiving a bachelors degree in Finance, Dave was hired as a corporate finance analyst within UPS and then promoted to finance and accounting supervisor for central PA, where he did the cost planning and managed an over 200 million dollar annual budget. During that period Dave started law school at night and continued as finance/accounting supervisor at UPS during the day. Dave attributes these 4 years in the navy and 8 years at UPS as the bedrock from which his successful legal career grew.

Dave received his undergraduate degree in Finance from Penn State University in 2002, and graduated from Widener Law School in 2007. After graduation from law school he worked as Law Clerk for the Honorable Joseph C. Adams, now President Judge of the York County Court of Common Pleas. Dave has been a prosecutor with the York County District Attorney’s Office since 2009 and currently serves as the District Attorney’s Chief Deputy Prosecutor of Litigation. In that capacity, Dave oversees Major Crime cases and the Felony Narcotics Unit. Dave is also the Legal Advisor to the District Attorney’s Drug Task Force and York County Quick Response (a.k.a. SWAT) Team.

In 2013, Dave was appointed by the United States Department of Justice as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, where he assisted in the prosecution of gang, illegal gun, and drug cases in Federal Court. It was during this time period that Dave led the prosecution of Operation Sunrise, which was a large scale multi-jurisdictional arrest and prosecution of over 100 members and/or affiliates of the “Latin Kings,” a violent criminal gang operating in York County.

Dave is currently leading York County’s fight against the heroin epidemic. He, along with Coroner Pam Gay, co-founded the York County Heroin Task Force. Dave’s leadership was also instrumental in the expansion of the District Attorney’s Drug Task force to fight the heroin trade throughout the entirety of York County.

Dave protects our seniors through his role on the Elder Abuse Task Force. In addition to conducting numerous Scam Prevention seminars throughout the county, Dave has successfully prosecuted scam artists targeting senior citizens.

As the District Attorney’s Chief of Litigation, Dave has personally tried approximately fifty felony jury trials to verdict including the successful prosecution of over ten of the most high profile murder trials in recent memory. Dave has obtained First Degree Murder Convictions in a multi-defendant gang murder, a targeted multi-victim shooting, and a domestic violence killing, among others.

In addition to homicides, Dave has successfully prosecuted Murder Conspiracies, the Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, multiple Murders for Hire, Felony Narcotics Deliveries, Aggravated Assaults, Burglaries, Armed Robberies, Bank Robberies, Insurance Fraud Cases, Thefts and Elder Fraud Scams to name a few.

Dave’s success as an Assistant District Attorney result from a unique blend of strong leadership, discipline, and sound judgment honed during his years as a corporate financial analyst for UPS and as a noncommissioned officer in the United States Navy.

The realities of today’s fast paced legal environment create challenges for the District Attorney that must be faced head on. Although forensic science is constantly advancing, criminals are becoming more sophisticated.  Senior citizens are being increasingly targeted. York County is facing a growing threat unlike any other in the form of Heroin addiction. While at the same time, the economic constraints of today’s world demand our elected District Attorney does more with less.

Dave’s years in the military and corporate private sector combined with his current role as the District Attorney’s Chief of Litigation provide the citizens of York County a proven leader for District Attorney who not only can do the job but is doing the job right now.
